Below is a brief description of one of our current contracts;

Moulsecoomb is an area of multiple deprivation to the north east of Brighton where NewmanFrancis provides community development support. We’re based at St George’s Hall, which is run by a team of resident volunteers. We support a weekly community morning where you can buy fresh fruit and veg, get a cooked breakfast and little one’s can play with all the toys. We’re working with residents to make the Hall sustainable through increasing its use by local residents and service providers alike.

We support the Local Action Team (LAT), a forum tackling crime and community safety issues. It’s approaching its first birthday and is chaired by a local Councillor and run by a resident committee. With our support residents have set priorities and agreed an action plan. Most of which has been achieved through close partnership working between the agencies and residents involved in the LAT. We’re particularly proud of the Moulsecoomb Challenge Day when 200+ residents turned out with Housing, the Youth Service, local Councillors, Police and contractors to clear away bulk rubbish from the estate. We cleared 48 skips worth!!

The Bangladeshi community is the largest minority group in Moulsecoomb and we’ve helped establish a Bangladeshi Women’s group. Our role is to increase both confidence itself and knowledge about the services available. We regularly meet in the Primary School for a home cooked lunch and to listen to a speaker about topics such as cancer screening, housing advice and Police liaison. We’ve helped organise English classes, tailoring and even women only swim sessions – the first in Brighton.

Our approach is to link resident’s interests and priorities with relevant service providers who can help resolve issues. We’re also regularly approached by service providers to introduce community members to outreach workers. Through the LAT we’re establishing a community voice and focal point for consultation across the area. This is especially usefully with the development of Falmer Academy and the stadium for Brighton and Hove Albion on Moulsecoomb’s doorstep.

Our role is to support

1. A strong, representative local neighbourhood group towards long term sustainability that has clear governance arrangements and equitable processes for achieving community representation.

2. A community managed building towards independence and sustainability.

3. The engagement and empowerment of black and minority ethnic groups in order to reduce inequality.
